Disney, Walt(er Elias)
U.S. film producer and cartoonist. Born in Chicago, he grew up in Missouri. In the 1920s he joined with Ub Iwerks (1901-1971) to create animated commercials and cartoons (see animation). When a distributor cheated them, Walt moved to Hollywood, enlisted his brother Roy as his business manager, and persuaded Iwerks to join them. Together they created Mickey Mouse. The cheerful rodent—customarily drawn by Iwerks, with Disney providing the voice—starred in the first animated film with sound, Steamboat Willie (1928). The brothers formed Walt Disney Productions (later the Disney Co.) in 1929. Mickey Mouse's instant popularity led them to invent such other characters as Donald Duck, Pluto, and Goofy and to make several short cartoon films, including The Three Little Pigs (1933). The company grew to include a staff of cartoonists, headed by Iwerks. Their first full-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), was followed by such classics as Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Cinderella (1950), and Peter Pan (1953). Disney also produced other films, including Mary Poppins (1964), and television shows. He created the plans for Disneyland and initiated the construction of Disney World (see Disney World and Disneyland).
