Arlen, Harold

U.S. songwriter. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., to a Jewish cantor and a pianist, Arlen left school to form a band, and he made a living until he was 24 chiefly as a performer and arranger. In 1929 he began a successful collaboration with lyricist Ted Koehler (1894-1973) with “Get Happy”; their later songs, including “I've Got the World on a String,” were featured in shows at Harlem's Cotton Club. Arlen's Broadway musicals included You Said It (1931); Life Begins at 8:40 (1934); Hooray for What? (1937); Bloomer Girl (1944); St. Louis Woman (1946) and Saratoga (1959), both with J. Mercer; and House of Flowers (1954), with Truman Capote. For Hollywood, Arlen wrote “It's Only a Paper Moon,” “Let's Fall in Love,” and “That Old Black Magic.” His most famous song is perhaps “Over the Rainbow” (lyrics by E.Y. Harburg) from The Wizard of Oz (1939).
